First light at Cement Creek

First light at Cement Creek

One morning several years ago I left our house early and headed off through the Black Spur to try and capture some photographs of the sun rising over the Cathedral Ranges, however as I came through Buxton it became clear that I was out of luck – a thick fog had rolled across the ranges and was obscuring not only the mountains, but also any hope of seeing the sun.

Disappointed, I turned around and drove back across the ranges, taking a detour via the Acheron Way. As I arrived at the junction of the Mount Donna Buang Road, I stopped to take a walk into the “Rainforest Gallery”, a walking track that includes a viewing platform high up in the tree canopy above the headwaters of Cement Creek.

Luckily, just as I arrived, the fog had finally started to lift, and the first rays of the morning light had just started to filter through the dense canopy, striking various pinpoints along the creek below. I fired off a number of shots, including the one that formed the inspiration for this painting.

This is another painting that was done using only a palette knife and a limited palette of colours. I really love the effect that the palette knife imparts into the thick impasto paint, bringing a sense of movement and light into the image.
